Sojiri
Seetharamayya and Pallavi Duraiswami Ayyar were so puffed up with their own
musical attainments that they did not initially regard Thyagaraja with due
veneration. They had an impression that Thyagaraja was a mere bhajan-singer
without much depth in musical talent.Â
One night, Thyagaraja was sitting on the pial of his house and
developing Saurashtra ragam in a detailed manner. These two musicians were
passing that street and heard Thyagaraja’s singing. They were captivated with
the depth of music and settled on the pial of a neighboring house to listen
completely. After elaborate development of raga, he took up tanam, etc.,
stretching to several hours. On the next day morning they met Thyagaraja and
beseeched for pardon for assuming poorly about him. Thyagaraja as usual took
them magnanimously but also accepted them to be his disciples. Sojiri
Seerharamayya later became personally close to him and also accompanied on tour
to Kancheepuram and Thirupathi.
